Just two train stops before Sonestown (where our Philadelphia visitors picked up the narrow gauge to Eagles Mere) some passengers got off to go to Essick Heights. Both summer communities offered all the same enjoyment.
What happened to this resort?
Eagles Mere Museum invites you to a presentation and book signing of two local historically significant books: Ghost on the Allegheny: the Hotel Essick and From a Bygone Era: Views of the Muncy Valley Then and Now.
The authors are Dr. David L. Richards, a licensed battlefield guide in Gettysburg and Matthew B. Stackhouse, an avid collector of local historic postcards and memorabilia.
The Hotel Essick which opened in 1889, burned to the ground in 1916. The magnificent structure and campus boasted a golf course, tennis courts, riding stables and, later, electric lights. It was adjacent to a small lake, Highland Lake about seven miles north of Tivoli. An entire community grew up around the hotel, with individual cottages, not unlike Eagles Mere.
Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Books autographed by the authors will be available for sale
