Join us on Friday, July 30 on the second floor of the museum at 3 p.m. for a project celebrating the Eagles Mere Regatta.
Children ages 5 and older will paint a small wooden boat, then walk down to the Edgemere dock at 4 p.m. to sail the boats. Kids must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling. Cost is $3 per child.
Bring your cameras!
The 1800s meet the 21st century at the Eagles Mere Museum.
This summer two interns from Penn State have come to help us archive and interpret the
treasures we have from the past.
Ben Goff and Andrea Miller are bringing us into the technology age with a new
dimension to how we present old artifacts and the history of Eagles Mere.
With their help, the museum now invites you to come touch and not just look.
That is, we now have a touch screen opportunity for those of you who wish to
push a button and find out more information about the history of our small
borough in Sullivan County, Pa. This interactive touch screen display
allows you to read original menus from the hotels, view old postcards, watch
short videos on the legends and history of Eagles Mere, and peruse upcoming
town events. Listening to Bush James tell the famous story of the bass and
the squirrel is worth the trip to Eagles Mere.
A walking tours of the town is scheduled for Saturday, August 7 at 9:30 AM and will start from the front porch of the General Store.
Tucked into the Endless Mountains, Eagles Mere has been a
destination point for vacationers and summer residents since the late 1800s.
Come visit us and take a stroll through the past and experience aspects of the
culture and serenity of a small borough at the turn of the century and trace
its history to the next century.
At the
center of the museum is a rotating exhibit. Our new exhibit is a fun display of
sports memorabilia that reflects the history of summer activities for kids and
adults alike. Eagles Mere Lake has a
long tradition of water activities and recreation. A picture of bathing beauties will welcome
you to an array of swimsuits worn in the 30’s and 40’s, and you can admire the
medals that were awarded to participants in the water-treading contest or
distance swimming. Move to the next display case and discover the history of
the Eagles Mere Athletic Association (EMAA), well known for its summer programs
for children. Golf and tennis were high
on the list, too. Many of you may
remember the Crestmont tennis tournaments. You may be surprised to know that
Eagles Mere actually had a bowling alley as well. There is so much to delight
and entertain you at the Eagles Mere Museum.
We have two wonderful interns from Penn State
this summer. We'll allow them to introduce themselves:
Greetings, Eagles Mere! I am generally referred to as Ben
Goff. Next semester I will be a senior at the Pennsylvania State
University. I will graduate with a degree in history, accompanied by
minors in French and Classic and Ancient Mediterranean Studies.
Currently, I am an active member in the PSU Paintball and Racquetball
Clubs and I'm looking forward to an exciting and eventful summer in
Eagles Mere.
My name is Andrea Miller and I am a 2010
graduate of Penn State University Park. I majored in history with a minor in
English. I was the secretary of the Keystone Honor Society and Penn State
Grange. I also graduated from Penn State's Schreyer's Honors College
with honors in history. In my own time, I enjoy learning and doing new things,
practicing Parelli Natural Horsemanship, and soap making.
A group from Red Lion visited Eagles Mere on June 12 on a "mystery trip". (For a mystery trip, you sign up without knowing exactly where you're going.) They toured the museum, had some time for the shops, took a tour of the town, ate lunch at
the Crestmont Inn, stopped at Wright’s View, and ended up at the Endless
Mountains War
Museum in Sonestown.
